George Lucas' Original STAR WARS Theatrical Cut Is Now Streaming

Star Wars fans have struggled for a long time to find an official streaming option for the original 1977 theatrical cut of Star Wars: A New Hope, this is the version of the film before George Lucas started making all of the changes starring in the ‘80s.

Now, for a limited time, that version of the film is available to stream, but you’ll need a Roku device and access to an app called Cinema Box.

This particular cut is a rarity in the digital age. Unlike the widely available Special Editions, it doesn’t have the Episode IV: A New Hope subtitle in the opening crawl, which Lucas didn’t add until 1981.

Finding this version of the film is rough and the only real way to be able to watch it has been on VHS, Laserdisc, or the 2006 DVD release that included the theatrical cut.

Streaming services, including Disney+, have only offered the altered versions, making this Cinema Box appearance a very rare opportunity.

The real question, though, is how long it will last. Cinema Box has hosted the theatrical cut before, only for it to disappear without warning. There’s no telling when that will happen again. If you have a Roku, now might be the time to act before it disappears back into obscurity.

So, if you want to experience Star Wars exactly as audiences did in 1977, now is your chance!
