George Lucas Reveals His STAR WARS Sequel Trilogy Would Have Focused on Leia and Brought Back Darth Maul

Some interesting new information has come to light regarding the Star Wars sequel trilogy that George Lucas was planning before Disney bought Lucasfilm. The information comes from Taschen’s The Star Wars Archives 1999-2005, a new book that examines the complete story of the prequel films.

The new information comes from Lucas himself, who says that the sequel trilogy would have put a focus on Leia. He says:

“The movies are about how Leia – I mean, who else is going to be the leader? – is trying to rebuild the Republic… Luke is trying to restart the Jedi.”

It’s also revealed that the story would have led to the heroes of the story facing off with a resurrected Darth Maul and an apprentice of his. Lucas went on to say:

“Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy.”

This is the first time I’ve heard any of this! It’s explained that Lucas’s whole project fell apart due to an ambitious timeframe and Lucas’s desire to spend time elsewhere:

“At that time I was starting the next trilogy; I talked to the actors and I was starting to gear up. I was also about to have a daughter… it takes 10 years to make a trilogy… I’d still be working on Episode 9! … Finally, I’d decided I’d rather raise my daughter and enjoy life for a while.”

We all know what happened next. He decided to sell Lucasfilm to Disney and ride off into the sunset with his family.
