George Lucas Told J.J. Abrams Palpatine Was Dead and Didn't Intend on Bringing Him Back
Star Wars fans were shocked, excited and confused when the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Palpatine would return. It’s pretty crazy that J.J. Abrams is bringing him back for this final chapter in the Skywalker saga, but this is something that George Lucas never intended to do.
In fact, when Abrams talked to Lucas about Palpatine, asking “is he dead?”, Abrams said he responded with, “Yes, he is. Absolutely dead.”
Lucas never intended to bring the villainous character back, but Abrams obviously had his own ideas. Even if the Emporer is dead, though, there are ways to bring back dead people for stories thanks to the power of the Force. So, Palpatine could still be dead, but he could also be working through another plane of existence with his powers.
We’ll eventually find out, but the most recent promo spot that was released for the film where Kylo Ren encounters Palpatine was very telling on the role Palpatine has played over the course of these films.
All of our questions will be answered when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
