George Miller Says The Long-Awaited MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Sequels Are Going To Happen
It’s been a long time since we’ve had any kind of update on the sequel that George Miller has been developing for Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s been so long that I wasn’t sure if the films would ever get made. Well, Miller confirmed in an interview with IndieWire that these sequels are going to happen and those films would focus on Mad Max and Furiosa.
"There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the [Warner Bros.] thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen."
Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron have both said they would return to the franchise when the films were ready to go, so they are expected to reprise their roles. I loved their work in Fury Road! That was such a badass movie!
It’s crazy to me that it is taking so long to get a sequel made! The movie was such a huge hit and the concepts for the sequel were ready to go, but sometimes behind-the-scenes drama causes projects to stall. George Miller ended up suing WB over Fury Road earnings. Thankfully, it sounds like things are almost to a point where Miller will start working on these sequels.
I love the Mad Max film franchise and I’m super excited for what the future holds for these characters! When previously talking about Furiosa, Miller said:
"Yeah, she’s a pretty compelling character so it would be great to tell her story. Her backstory is really interesting. We only allude to it in this movie because this movie is on the run; people don’t have much time for recreational talk. But you pick up, you have a sense of her having gone through stuff. That’s what the film is trying to do. You’re trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying. One of the things that’s really gratifying, people are reading the film more than just the surface — the events of the movie, and just picking up a lot of stuff underneath it, which is very deliberate......So in many ways, the audience is picking up a lot about Furiosa — or enough to intrigue. And she’s got an interesting story."
He went on to talk about the other characters in the story, saying that each one of them could basically have their own movie, and then focuses his attention on the Doof Warrior:
“I could tell the stories of every character in the story. I could tell the story of the guitar and the Doof Warrior. I can tell you the story of how his guitar was made, and how he survived, effectively a blind guitarist who only can speak through the guitar really and how he survived the apocalypse. And how he got to be basically working for Immortan’s army and so on. So everything has to have a backstory.”
Hopefully, these sequels happen sooner rather than later. I want more Mad Max movies in my life!
