George R.R. Martin Confirms There Are Still Multiple GAME OF THRONES Projects Still in Play at HBO

George R.R. Martin has stirred the pot once more, reminding fans that HBO still has several Game of Thrones project moving through development, and that some of them are sequels.

During a recent appearance at the Iceland Noir convention, Martin gave fans a fresh update on the future of the franchise. For a long time, the conversation has centered on early stage prequel ideas, but it turns out HBO’s deck of projects is a bit more varied than expected.

Martin reportedly told attendees that there are "five or six" spinoff projects in development and that while most were prequels, “there are some sequels.”

One of the best known sequel concepts has been the Jon Snow follow up, which would explore the character’s life beyond the Wall with the Wildlings. That show seemed to be dead in the water after stalling in late 2024.

Another sequel idea centered on Arya Stark’s westward voyage into uncharted lands. Maisie Williams has said she’d consider returning as Arya if the story was right. With Martin confirming sequels are in the mix, the Arya project feels like it could be possible.

There’s also the more straightforward continuation option where HBO could choose to pick up exactly where the finale left off, following Bran the Broken as ruler of the Six Kingdoms or exploring Sansa Stark’s reign as Queen in the North. It wouldn’t take much to imagine political intrigue and new threats brewing just after the end of the original series.

A more experimental route might jump forward by several decades. A story several years after the events of Game of Thrones could introduce fresh characters dealing with the lingering impact of the heroes who came before them. The legacy of Jon, Arya, Sansa, and others would still be recent history rather than distant myth.

While sequel chatter ramps up again, HBO is already deep into its current slate of prequels. House of the Dragon is renewed through Season 4 with a tentative 2028 premiere window. The network is also gearing up for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which arrives January 18 and just released its teaser trailer.

We may not know which Game of Thrones idea hits the screen next, but the possibilities are wide open and it will be exciting to see what the next project will get the greenlight.
