George R.R. Martin Developing THE ICE DRAGON as an Animated Film For Warner Bros.

George R.R. Martin is developing an animated feature film adaptation of his children's fantasy novel The Ice Dragon for Warner Bros. He is set to write and produce the film.

The Ice Dragon was first published in 1980, and it tells the story of "a young girl and the ice dragon she befriends in a mythical land of frigid snow after the death of her mother. The ice dragon was an untamed creature of legend and fear, and when it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land, but the girl was unafraid because she was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone could remember. Her friendship leads to the ice dragon defending the girl’s world from fiery dragons on a summer day."

In case you're wondering, Martin has stated that The Ice Dragon is not set in the same universe as "A Song of Ice and Fire." However, several press releases, book covers and commentaries have claimed that it is set in the same world.

Regardless, this is a great story to adapt as an animated film and I'm curious to see who the studio brings on to direct it. As happy as I am to see this happening, it means that it's just another distraction that will keep Martin from finishing The Winds Of Winter anytime soon.

What do you all think about The Ice Dragon being developed as an animated film?

Here's the book description:

The ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember.
Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara's home. And only a winter child--and the ice dragon who loved her--could save her world from utter destruction.
