George R.R. Martin Says That GAME OF THRONES Could've Gone Up To 13 Seasons

As you all know, HBO’s Game of Thrones is coming to an end after eight seasons. The final season is upon us, but according to creator George R.R. Martin the series could have kept going to up to 13 seasons! While talking to Variety, he said:

“We could’ve gone 11, 12, 13 seasons. David and Dan have been saying for like five seasons that seven seasons is all they would go. We got them to go to eight but not any more than that. There was a period like five years ago when they were saying seven seasons and I was saying 10 seasons and they won, they’re the ones actually working on it.”

I imagine that producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just didn’t want to be developing this series for the rest of their careers. Eight season seems like a reasonable amount of time to stick with a series and see it through to the end. However, it would have been nice to get more seasons! It’s interesting to hear that that’s what Martin was hoping and fighting for.

At least we have that spinoff series coming! That show is set thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones. The series is described as chronicling "the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know."

Martin talked about the other spinoff series in development saying, that there are “five other shows, five prequels in development that are based on other periods and the history of Westeros — some of them just 100 years before ‘Game of Thrones,’ some of them 5000 years before ‘Game of Thrones.'”

As far as we know, HBO isn’t moving forward with any of those other shows. Just the one spinoff that Martin would like to call The Long Night.

I’m ok with Game of Thrones ending after eight seasons, especially with the spinoff that’s currently in development. That will ease the pain a little bit.

Game of Thrones took home the Best Drama award last night at the Emmys and it was definitely deserved! It was also great to see Peter Dinklage win again!
