George R.R. Martin's THE WINDS OF WINTER Is Rumored to Be Finished and Headed for a Fall Release

It’s been 17 long years since A Dance With Dragons hit shelves, and in that time the world of Westeros has exploded across TV with Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms keeping the franchise alive in different ways.

Still, the one thing fans have actually been anxiously and impatiently waiting for is the next chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter.

Now, according to a circulating anonymous claim, George R.R. Martin has finally completed the manuscript for The Winds of Winter, and his publisher has had it in hand since January. The same rumor suggests that an official announcement could arrive around Comic Con, with a full release planned for the fall to line up with holiday sales.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because fans have been here before.

Reactions online have been all over the place. Some readers are cautiously optimistic, others aren’t buying it for a second, and a few are already complaining about the rumored size of the book.

One fan summed up the concern, saying: “1600 pages? Why? Why did he need to do that? Please tell me it’s actually both books – TWOW and ADOS – at the same time. I don’t want to read a 1600-page book,” referencing the long-discussed final installment, A Dream of Spring. Another fan fired back with, “Then you are no GRRM fan.”

Fan’s have been waiting nearly two decades, and patience has worn thin in different ways for different people.

What gives this latest rumor a bit more weight is that it lines up with something Martin himself said back in December 2025. At the time, he mentioned he was getting close to finishing the book.

Even so, a lot of fans aren’t ready to trust that timeline just yet. The history of delays has trained readers to take every update with a grain of salt.

Still, there are little details that keep people talking. Another fan pointed out a curious contradiction tied to Martin’s past comments: “Interesting how George RR Martin said he wouldn’t work on any more Dunk and Egg stories until Winds was done and he talked about writing more Dunk and Egg stories in mid January….”

At this point, the rumored fall release window feels like the most exciting and most dangerous kind of hope. If it’s real, it means the long wait is almost over. If it isn’t, it’s just another chapter in the ongoing saga of anticipation surrounding The Winds of Winter.

Either way, fans aren’t going anywhere. Westeros still has a hold on them, and until Martin finally delivers the next book, every rumor like this is going to hit like wildfire.
