GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE Director Says Movie is Scarier and Funnier and He Teases "Dangerous" New Villain
When the Ghostbusters franchise rebooted with the great 2021 film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the story played out as both a love letter to original fans, as well as a fresh start with interesting new characters and a new take on some old villains and storylines. It was the perfect bridge into this new frontier. It looks like in the upcoming film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, we are going to see something we have never dreamed of before within this universe, and director Gil Kenan promises more scares, more laughs, and a villain unlike any we have seen before.
In the most recent edition of SFX magazine, Kenan described the film, saying:
"This is a scary Ghostbusters movie, I set out to go for the thrills. As a big-screen experience, I think it’s going to play like a scary, funny movie. The secret is that the scarier a scene is, the funnier the next joke is going to play. That’s the way that the pendulum swings with tone. Twisting that lever to make sure that the scares land is a way of making sure that the jokes are funnier."
He went on to talk about the new mythology created for the film, as well as the darkness within the story:
"We’ve moved past the mythology of Gozer, which defined Ghostbusters and was rekindled in Afterlife as a way to close that initial loop. We have finally freed ourselves to now introduce a whole new menace, and with that, we’ve created a new mythology and we’ve expanded how deep and how frightening and how dangerous a villain can be in one of these stories."
I have loved every bit of footage we’ve been able to see from the film so far, and I can’t wait to see the whole movie when it comes out next month! Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire releases in theaters on March 22nd.
