GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE Stars Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon Talk About Riding in the Original ECTO-1
We are just a month away from the exciting new chapter in the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Not only will we get to see the original cast returning to their roles, joining the new generation cast as they did in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but we will also get to see the ECTO-1 returned to its original state.
In Afterlife, we see Egon Spengler’s (Harold Ramis) family move into his farmhouse after he passed away, and his grandson discovers the Ghostbusters’ old vehicle decaying in a barn. He gets it running, but throughout the rest of the movie, it stays pretty dirty and beat up. When the original ghostbusters show up at the end of the movie to help Egon’s grandkids, Winston (Ernie Hudson) sees the ECTO-1 and vows to return it to its original condition.
We know the next movie is taking place back in New York, at the firehouse used as the ghostbusters headquarters, so this should be the perfect time to see the car restored. When asked in the upcoming issue of Total Film what it was like to get to ride in, and even drive, the classic piece of movie memorabilia, stars of the film Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon said it was “really exciting.”
Rudd said:
"To be in a Ghostbusters flight suit and driving the Ecto-1 was a real kick. You know, there aren’t many of those vehicles around. It isn’t like they built them new for this movie. It’s pretty crazy to think, 'This is the Ecto-1 from the original Ghostbusters and I get to drive it.'"
He went on:
"You’re thinking, 'Holy shit.' You’re thinking, 'Wait, I’m actually driving the Ecto-1. This is the coolest thing ever.' But then you’re thinking, 'Don’t crash.' You feel the weight of that thing, both literally and metaphorically, so it’s exciting and interesting."
Rudd wasn't the only one blown away by the experience either, with Coon adding that the process isn't always a relaxing ride.
"More than once, we’ve been stuck inside the Ecto-1 when something would fall off or break. I know it’s a very enviable position to be inside that car, but we do get beat up inside it. There are sharp edges. We all get bruises. It’s not comfortable. You know, it’s like driving an old car – but it’s also very surreal. To be honest, I still can’t wrap my head around the idea that I was inside the Ecto-1. Until I see the finished movie with my own eyes, it feels like I’m having an '80s dream."
It’s not much longer now! Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit screens on March 29th.
