Giancarlo Esposito Teases What Moff Gideon Wants with The Child in THE MANDALORIAN

If you’ve watched The Mandalorian, then you know that Giancarlo Esposito‘s Moff Gideon is hell-bent on getting his hands on the Yoda-like child, but we still don’t know why exactly he wants him. Obviously, he knows the child is special and has the power of The Force, but what are his intentions with the little guy?

During a recent interview with IGN at the Television Critics Association panel, the actor offered a little tease that will give fans something to think about and discuss:

“Like any great leader or scientist – clue, clue, clue – with someone who is advanced in a certain way, yeah, you could want to be their best friend, or you could want to co-opt what is inside them to figure out how to make all of us a little better at humanity. So it’s that power and control of a Moff leader who is trying to put the universe back together. But, how does he know everything? How does he know everything that’s going on? He’s a very interesting character and I’m so honored to be a part of this production.”

There’s speculation that The Child could be a clone of Yoda, or perhaps some kind of offspring. Those theories seem kind of obvious to me and I can’t help but think that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are going to do something unique and unexpected. Regardless of The Child’s origin, it’s obvious that he’s strong with The Force. Maybe Gideon wants to extract midichlorians from him to harness the Force for himself?

What would he do with the power, though? According to Esposito, it’s “to co-opt what is inside them to figure out how to make all of us a little better at humanity.” That may seem like it’s selfless and for the well-being of others, but we all know that’s not the case.
