GKIDS Acquires North American Distribution For Loundraw's Anime Film SUMMER GHOST

GKIDS has announced that they have acquired the North American distribution rights to the anime “short feature” Summer Ghost. Developed from a single illustration by artist loundraw who illustrated the novel I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, this feature will debut in theaters in the original Japanese along with a new English dub. Each showing will also feature a documentary about the making of the feature as well as additional special content. Here’s the official synopsis:

A local urban legend claims that lighting fireworks at an abandoned airfield will call the “summer ghost,” a spirit that can answer any question. Three troubled teenagers – Tomoya, Aoi, and Ryo – do not know each other yet, but each has their own reasons to show up one day. When a sparkler is lit, a ghost named Ayane appears, and she reveals she is only visible to those “who are about to touch their death.” The three teens return home, but Tomoya soon begins visiting the airfield alone, as he becomes obsessed with the mystery surrounding Ayane and the true purpose of her visits.

It looks interesting. Given loundraw’s past work with I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, these themes of death do not surprise me at all. Although it was released in Japan in November 2021, we don’t have a North American release date yet. But you can check out the trailer below and let me know what you think, will you be checking this out when it comes to theaters?
