GODZILLA MINUS ONE Director Says He Has Complicated Feelings About Making a Sequel

With Godzilla Minus One being a massive success, a lot of fans are wondering if director Takashi Yamazaki will return to make another one. The filmmaker has been a fan of Kaiju movies since he was a kid, and now he’s responsible for one of the best Kaiju films that has been made. The pressure is on to take the franchise to the next level, but he has conflicted feelings on the matter.

During an interview with GQ Japan, the director admitted he wasn't sure if he want to make a sequel to Godzilla Minus One. He said:

"I'd like to see someone else's Godzilla, but I want to make a next time as well. I've got very complicated feelings.”

Yamazaki does have an interest in making another Godzilla movie, but as a fan, he also wants to see how another filmmaker would handle the giant creature. I’ll tell you what… I wouldn’t want to be the filmmaker to follow up Godzilla Minus One, even the director himself is sure he wants to either!

One thing is for sure, Toho is going to ask Yamazaki to make another movie,. we’re just going to have to wait and see what he ends up choosing to do.

The movie is set in Japan 1945-1947. “After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how — and with whom — will Japan stand up to it?”

The director recently shared a message to Godzilla fans in North America thanking them for their support of the film and its success, saying: “We're excited by the tremendous response in North America. I've been reading the fan feedback on social media and am very encouraged by the passionate comments based on a thorough analysis of the film. In some theaters, I've heard there was even applause. Thank you for warmly receiving our Godzilla."
