GODZILLA MINUS ONE Director Wants to Make a Live-Action Adaptation of Studio Ghibli's NAUSICAA

The director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki, is at the top of his game right now, and there’s no doubt that he’s getting all kinds of offers from different studios to direct film projects for them. But there are projects that he would personally like to develop, and one of those is a live-action adaptation of Studio Ghibli's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

When this was recently brought in an interview in Japan with the TV series Bokura no Jidai with Studio Ghibli executive producer and co-founder Toshio Suzuki, he said that Yamazaki has asked about adapting Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind many times, but they keep telling him no. Suzuki said:

"I've heard that many times from Yamazaki personally, but the answer has always been no."

This isn’t surprising as Studio Ghibli has never endorsed a live-action film adaptation of its films, and despite Yamazaki being a talented director, the animation company just isn’t interested in pursuing that. However, if Yamazaki did get the opportunity, I bet he’d make a great live-action adaptation.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in 1984. The film, set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is threatened by a toxic jungle filled with giant insects, tells the story of Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind. She is a courageous and empathetic leader who seeks to understand the toxic environment rather than destroy it. Nausicaä believes that humans can live in harmony with nature and the mutated creatures within it. Throughout her journey, she uncovers the truth about the jungle and fights to prevent warring factions from destroying what remains of the planet.
