GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel Gets Title and Logo - Director Takashi Yamazaki Returns
The King of the Monsters is coming back for more destruction. During this year’s Godzilla Fest 2025 in Tokyo, fans were treated to an exciting reveal with the official title and logo for the sequel to Godzilla Minus One. The next chapter in Toho’s legendary kaiju franchise will be called Godzilla Minus Zero, with Takashi Yamazaki returning to direct.
While details on the plot, cast, and release date are still under wraps, the title alone has fans speculating what Minus Zero could mean for the story. Along with the announcement, Toho also dropped a new logo designed by Yamazaki.
Fans can also check out a special announcement video below celebrating the big reveal, adding even more fuel to the excitement building around the project.
The 2023 film Godzilla Minus One was a massive success, both critically and commercially. It marked the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, and the 33rd produced by Toho, but it stood apart thanks to its emotional storytelling, grounded tone, and awesome visual effects.
Despite having a limited U.S. release, the film became the most successful Japanese Godzilla movie ever made, surpassing 2016’s Shin Godzilla. It was also the third-highest-grossing film in Japan that year, earning $113 million globally against a modest $15 million budget.
The movie went on to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, making history as the first non-English language film to ever take home the prize. Many credit Godzilla Minus One with reigniting the global love for the Godzilla franchise, proving that Toho’s original monster still reigns supreme.
Now, with Godzilla Minus Zero officially in development and Yamazaki back at the helm, fans can’t wait to see where the story goes next. If the last film is any indication, we’re in for another intense, visually stunning, and emotionally charged kaiju epic.
In a previous interview, the director said: "If I were to direct the next Godzilla movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one. There have been two standalone Godzilla films in a row now, so perhaps the next one will need to feature a villain monster.”
He also explained that he wants to make a Kaiju vs. Kaiju movie that’s actually good, saying: "I don’t know if anyone has achieved a more serious tone of kaiju vs kaiju with human drama, that challenge, is something I would like to explore."
He went on to add, "When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it's very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component."
As a fan of Godzilla Minus One, I can’t wait to see what Yamazaki is going to deliver with the sequel!
