GODZILLA x KONG: SUPERNOVA Will Bring SpaceGodzilla Back to The Big Screen
The MonsterVerse is about to get a whole lot more interesting as Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is lining up the big screen return of SpaceGodzilla, and this time he’s set to crash headfirst into Legendary’s ever expanding kaiju playground.
According to a listing on the Writers Guild of America website, the upcoming sequel will officially pull from SpaceGodzilla lore. It’s been confirmed that David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green are credited as screenwriters, with a story by Callaham, and specifically notes that the film is “Based on the characters ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Space Godzilla’ owned and created by ToHo Co., LTD.”
For longtime fans, this is exciting news. SpaceGodzilla last appeared as the primary villain in Toho’s 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. The character is one of the franchise’s most unhinged creations, born when Godzilla’s cells were blasted into space, potentially by Mothra or remnants of Biollante, sucked into a black hole, fused with crystalline extraterrestrial organisms, and then spat back out as a mutated cosmic nightmare.
Visually, SpaceGodzilla looks like Godzilla’s evil space twin, complete with massive crystalline shoulder spikes replacing dorsal fins, a reddish purple chest, tusks, and a piercing high pitched roar.
His power set is just as wild as he can fire the Corona Beam, generate crystal structures for attack and defense, create force fields, use telekinesis to fly and levitate, and absorb energy from cosmic sources and crystal fields.
This kind of kaiju madness will be fun to see brought to life. The MonsterVerse started out fairly grounded with 2014’s Godzilla, but each sequel has leaned harder into the franchise’s stranger and wilder roots. We’ve gotten Mechagodzilla, Hollow Earth insanity, and monster tag team battles. SpaceGodzilla represents the next logical escalation.
Pitting Godzilla and Kong against a villain this powerful and visually insane raises the stakes in a big way. SpaceGodzilla isn’t just another monster brawl. He’s a full blown cosmic threat and exactly the kind of opponent that forces these two titans to push past their limits.
Of course, one lingering concern with these films has always been the human side of the story. That’s something Delroy Lindo addressed earlier this year while discussing his role in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
He said: “I appreciated the fact that these producers are equally cognizant of the fact that the human element in these narratives needs to be as strong as possible.
“And from that standpoint, they worked with me to flesh out the character they wanted me to play... we worked to flesh out the character and make the character as humanly relatable as possible, because they very smartly understand that in order to make these big CGI-inspired films work, the human element also has to be compelling for audiences.”
Grant Sputore, best known for I Am Mother, is directing the film from a script by Dave Callaham, who previously wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the story will revolve around Godzilla and Kong facing a new cataclysmic, world ending threat, which certainly lines up with SpaceGodzilla entering the picture.
The cast include Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who returns as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The countdown is on. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova smashes into theaters on March 26, 2027. What do you think about SpaceGodzilla coming back to the big screen in a Godzilla movie?
