GOTHAM Showrunner is Developing a New Batman Prequel Series That Will Focus on Alfred Pennyworth
With Gotham coming to an end after its fifth Season, showrunner Bruno Heller is already preparing for his next project. He has teamed up with the MGM-owned premium cable network Epix to develop a new 10-episode Batman prequel series that will focus on Alfred Pennyworth.
The series will be called Pennyworth, and it will tell the story of Bruce Wayne's best friend and butler. This is not a Gotham spinoff series and will be set in a completely different universe. This is an "entirely new story exploring Alfred's origins as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne — Bruce's billionaire father — in 1960s London."
Sean Pertwee, the actor who plays Alfred Pennyworth on Gotham, is not involved. As of right now, there's no word on who will take on the role of the character. Heller will write the series and will be an executive producer on it. Gotham's Danny Cannon will also executive produce the series and direct the pilot episode.
Epix president Michael Wright had this to say in a statement:
"As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story."
Heller and Cannon had this to say in a joint statement:
"Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate."
I like the idea of a series that focuses on Pennyworth! He's a badass character. I enjoyed what Heller did with Gotham, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he ends up doing with this Pennyworth series! What do you think about this new project!?
