GREEN LANTERN Series Showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith Offers an Update on the "Gigantic Show"
HBO and Seth Grahame-Smith have been working on the development on a new live-action DC series titled Green Lantern Corps. This project has been in the works for years already, and it’s been awhile since we’ve had an update. I thought for sure we’d get an update at DC FanDome, but that update never came.
During a recent interview with Collider, Grahame-Smith opened up about the series and offered an update saying that it is a "big undertaking" and that will take "a while" to become a reality, but don’t worry, that it’ll be worth the wait. Grahame-Smith explained:
"Yeah, that show is gigantic. It has taken quite a bit of time to get to this point and it's just a big, big undertaking. It's going really well. All I can say is that it's going really well and there are gonna be Green Lanterns in it, and it's gonna be on HBO Max."
He went on to talk about his history with comic books, saying that he wasn’t a big fan of comics, he was more of a movie guy:
"I'll admit, I wasn't like a huge comic book kid. I was a huge movie kid. And so, my introduction to DC Comics came through the '89 Batman movie. When that movie came out, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, Batman is the coolest,’ and I started reading Batman comic books. But Green Lantern is something that, to be honest with you, just came to me later, by way of just talking about doing the show. The possibility of doing the show led me down a deep dive of Green Lantern lore. We'll see. It's gonna be a while before the world gets to see that, but we are very, very busy at work, as we speak."
The show is said to reinvent the property through a story “spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.”
Finn Wittrock is taking on the role of Guy Gardner in the series with Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) set to play Alan Scott. The series is also expected to feature Sinestro, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Killowog, and a newly-created character named Bree Jarta.
Wittrock previously discussed the show and explained that it’s not going to be your average superhero story and teased how epic the story will be:
"It is really cool how sprawling a storyline it is. It's pretty epic. It spans time and space and has something for everyone. It's not your average superhero story… He takes on a lot of this show. He's a pretty big part of it. I think it's an interesting way in [to the story]. It's not the conventional way in, but I think people might see a side of him they didn't know was there."
The Green Lantern series is being written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Grahame-Smith, who are also all producers on the series. Also producing are Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, and David Katzenberg.
