Greg Nicotero and Robert Kirkman Confirm THE WALKING DEAD Spinoff Movies Starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes Are "Still Alive" and Will Be "Worth the Wait"
It had been a while since we heard anything about AMC’s plans for The Walking Dead spin-off films that were announced a couple of years ago at the last in-person Comic-Con. The movies are set to star Andrew Lincoln as the show’s original protagonist Rick Grimes, who we saw get taken by a mysterious organization in the middle of Season 9. Now we are facing the 11th and final season of the flagship series, and roads are leading to the films, so as we got to partake of the virtual Comic-Con weekend, we also got an update on the movies that we’ve been anticipating for a while now.
At a panel for Creepshow Season 3, TWD executive-producer, director, and special effects make-up designer Greg Nicotero gave a brief update on the first film in the trilogy (via CB), saying the films are ”still alive,” adding:
"I wish I knew, and I wish I could say [when it's happening]. I've read a variety of drafts of the scripts over the last few months. They're really making sure that they get it right."
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman expanded on the update in his Comic-Con@Home panel, saying that the Walking Dead movie will be “worth the wait,” and when pressed about the release date, he teased it is "definitely going to be before 2032." He added:
"I wish that there were more updates. There's a lot going on behind the scenes. It's entirely possible that there are some details that are coming out around Comic-Con that I just don't know we're allowed to talk about yet, so I'm being a good boy and I'm not gonna spoil anything. But I will say there's exciting stuff happening behind the scenes and I am as frustrated as you guys are that we have not been able to reveal everything to you and talk about it nonstop."
He went on to dispel the rumor that Rick Grimes might have appeared in the second season of the spin-off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond that is coming up, and reassured waiting fans, saying:
"Andrew Lincoln is amazing, I miss seeing Andrew Lincoln running around as Rick Grimes. I can't wait until we're filming this thing and then this thing's coming out, it's gonna be awesome," said Kirkman, who makes his feature film writing debut with the script he co-wrote with Gimple. "Everybody's working very hard to make this thing as good as it can be. All I will say: we don't want a bad Rick Grimes movie. We want an amazing Rick Grimes movie, so everybody behind the scenes is making sure that when this comes out it was worth the wait and it is actually the special, character-building Rick Grimes journey that everybody wants it to be."
Kirkman continued: "We're not going to be rushing this thing out, and we're going to make sure that it's perfect. So that's what's going on behind the scenes. And when it finally comes out, when we're showing trailers and stuff, you'll see. You'll be like, 'That's exactly what we wanted. I'm so glad they waited.'"
It’s great to hear that everything is still on track, but I think we will all be really relieved when we get to see a trailer and a release date. Are you looking forward to the continuation of the Rick Grimes story?
