GREMLINS: SECRETS OF MOGWAI Includes a Little BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA Easter Egg

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is now available to watch on HBO’s rebranding streaming service, Max. This is an animated series that I’ve been excited about watching as I’m a big fan of Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg’s classic Gremlins film franchise. It’s great that all these years later we are going to get an origin story for Gizmo!

In the series, James Hong takes on the role of Grandpa Wing. He also played Lo Pan in John Carpenter’s classic 1986 movie Big Trouble in Little China, and it seems like these two properties could easily be connected given the Chinese setting a lore.

During the press junket for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, the creative team was asked if there would be any Easter eggs in the show, and it was revealed that there is one little Big Trouble in Little China Easter egg.

It’s explained that Grandpa Wing has a distinctive hand gesture, which is something Lo Pan also used that fans will recognize. Showrunner Tze Chun told CB, "I think that there's a little hand gesture that I snuck in, and we also have an Easter egg for each one of James Hong's other credits in the show. So keep your eye out!"

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is a period piece set in 1920s Shanghai, and “the series reveals how a 10-year-old Sam Wing – who becomes the future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie – met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. They strike up a lifelong friendship as Wing attempts to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Meanwhile, the two and street thief Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”

Have you started watching the series yet? If so, are you enjoying it!?
