Greta Gerwig's CHRONICLES OF NARNIA Netflix Adaptation to Kick Off Production in 2024

Greta Gerwig has made hit after hit movie in her directing career, starting with Lady Bird, and this summer, breaking records with her hit film Barbie. She’s a hot commodity in Hollywood, and Netflix moved quickly to lock her in to making at least two films in an adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for the streamer.

It was officially announced this summer that she would be taking on the beloved story based on the books by C.S. Lewis, but we have not heard much about the plans for the film since then. But over the weekend, Scott Stuber, Head of Netflix Film, attended the grand reopening of the American Cinematheque at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, and Stuber gave Collider an update on Chronicles of Narnia, saying:

“Well, I think people know that we’re aspirationally trying to get Greta Gerwig’s [The Chronicles of] Narnia together and get that movie, which will be next year.”

So the only update is that it’s kicking off next year, but there’s not a lot else to say since fans know the story outline of the film(s). We know Gerwig is set to take on two films, and I don’t know if that means they’re combining some of the stories, but I would guess that she is remaking the first two, and if they do well, she will continue on to make the rest of the series. Gerwig is a great director, but she is nervous to take on such a beloved title. She expressed her nerves this summer, saying:

“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start.”

I think Gerwig is a perfect choice for these films. She makes movies with great stories and a lot of heart. We will let you know as more information rolls out regarding these films.
