Gritty SUPER MARIO BROS. Short Film Series - The Four Players

Screenwriter Evan Daugherty (Snow White and The Huntsman) has created a really cool series of gritty Super Mario Bros. short films for Maker Studios’ Polaris. The series is called The Four Players, and it reimagines four of the characters from the classic video game franchise.

The first two films have been released online, and you can watch them below. They are called "The Fixer," which centers on Mario, and "The Addict," which focuses on Luigi. The next two shorts will be released on Friday, and they are called "Star," which features Princess Peach, and "The Soldier," which follows Toad.

Daugherty had this to say in a statement,

"Making these short films gave me a chance to really ‘do my own thing,’ while having a little fun treating one of my favorite videogame properties with a darker vibe."

This is a really entertaining vision of this franchise, and it will be great to see what comes of all this. Nintendo hasn't been involved with a film since the first Super Mario Bros. movie crashed and burned in the '90s.
