Guillermo del Toro Has Announced His New Stop-Motion Animated Film Project THE BURIED GIANT
Guillermo del Toro’s recent Netflix film Pinocchio was a beautifully made adaptation of the classic story and it was done in such a cool and unique way. It is unlike any other adaptation of Pinocchio that we’ve seen before.
Now, the filmmaker is ready to jump into his next stop-motion feature film, and in an interview with The Telegraph, he revealed this new project will be an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's The Buried Giant. He is co-writing the script with Matilda: The Musical scribe Dennis Kelly.
Del Toro talked about the project, saying: "We start the design process in two months. Animation has given us so many indelible images over the years, but in many ways the industry wants to keep it at the children's table. So I want to keep pushing the medium into areas that demonstrate its capacity."
For those of you not familiar with the book, it’s described as “savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving.” The story is set in post-Arthurian Britain, “the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.”
That sound like a great story that will make for another wonderful film from Del Toro. This is a project that he’s been trying to get made for several years, so it’s awesome to see that he’s actually finally going to bring this story to life and I have no doubt he’s going to do a great job with it! We’ve got a long way to go, but I’m excited to see how it turns out!
