Guillermo del Toro Is Remastering a Black & White Version of NIGHTMARE ALLEY with an Extended Cut
A black & white version of Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley was already released on Hulu a couple of years ago, but the filmmaker recently shared that he is now working on a Nightmare Alley remaster, and it will be an extended cut.
The filmmaker shared on Bluesky: “I am remastering the B&W Nightmare Alley w an extended cut. Stay tuned.”
The director previously said of his Nightmare Alley: A Vision in Darkness & Light: “Although we shot Nightmare Alley in color, we lit it as if it were black and white. You can see exactly the same level of design, and we wanted to give viewers this special vantage as a take of the classic noir genre that the film is part of.”
Director of Photography Dan Laustsen explained: “When we designed and shot, we were always thinking color and black and white. The classic lighting I have used is an homage to all the incredible masters of cinematography who have inspired me.”
Nightmare Alley is a dark, visually stunning neo-noir thriller that delves into the depths of human greed, manipulation, and moral decay. Set in the 1940s, the film follows Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a charismatic but morally ambiguous drifter who rises through the ranks of a seedy carnival by mastering the art of mentalism.
Partnering with the alluring and equally ambitious Molly Cahill (Rooney Mara), Stan uses his talents to con the wealthy elite. However, his hubris leads him into a dangerous collaboration with the manipulative psychologist Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), whose own deceit and ambition push Stan toward a tragic downfall.
The movie also stars Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Holt McCallany, Ron Perlman, Richard Jenkins, and David Strathairn.
