Guillermo del Toro Reveals The Film He Regrets Not Directing

Guillermo del Toro always has several projects cooking at once. He's always working on multiple things and I'm sure he gets tons of other offers to direct films all the time that he has to turn down.

Out of all the projects that Del Toro has been offered over the years that he's turned down, there is one film project he regrets not taking. During a Q&A at the The Annecy Festival, the filmmaker was asked if he had any regrets and this is what he said:

The only one [I regret] is Harry Potter. Now and then I go, 'Oh, fuck.'

He doesn't say which Harry Potter film he was offered but there was a rumor in the past that he was in the running to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Out of all the Harry Potter films that would have been the one that suited him best because of all the wonderful horror elements that it had.

The movie ultimately ended up being directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) and it was the first film in the franchise that I thought was a truly great film. I loved it. I have no idea if Del Toro would have done a better job, but regardless the film ended up being great.

Makes me wonder why he turned it down in the first place. He obviously had a vision for the story that he would've liked to tell. Otherwise he wouldn't be thinking, "Oh, fuck" every now and then.
