Guillermo Del Toro Wanted to End His HELLBOY Trilogy With a Comic Book and Mike Mignola Said No

I don’t know about you, but Guillermo Del Toro’s theatrical version of Hellboy, in my opinion, was fantastic. I always felt cheated that the third was never made. It turns out that Del Toro wanted to end the series with a comic book. Considering that Hellboy started out as a comic, it would have been fitting that the films would end with a comic. Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, had a different idea.

ScreenRant was able to sit down with Mignola and ask him what happened to the comic, and this is what he had to say:

I think del Toro mentioned it to me once, and I said no. I think, let the comics be the comics. Comics are confusing enough for people. Let's not have two different versions of the Hellboy comic out there. My vote would be (to say) no.

There were rumors of tensions between Mignola and Del Toro because of the changes that were made in the film adaptations. Now there is a little more of a clear reason why the third film was scrapped and we were left with the 2019 reboot that was not well-received by fans and critics.

I feel that Mignola’s excuse is weak, but who am I to judge? Let me know what you think about the reason why the comic didn’t get made.
