Guillermo del Toro Was Attached To Direct a STAR WARS Movie From a Script Written By David S. Goyer
During a recent interview, screenwriter David S. Goyer (Blade, Foundation) revealed that he was writing a script for a Star Wars movie back in 2019, and Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct the movie! Del Toro also responded, confirming his involvement with the project.
While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer shared: "I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct." Goyer explained that “it was about four years ago.”
The writer then revealed that he also worked in a Jedi origins film saying, “I also wrote a ‘scriptment’ for an origins of the Jedi story… that took place 25,000 years before the first Star Wars film."
That project sounds like it’s in line with what director James Mangold is currently developing for Lucasfilm. His movie also takes place 25,000 years before the events of Episode I and it will focus on the birth of The Force.
As for the Star Wars project Del Toro was looking to direct, he offered a cryptic tease on social media of what it could’ve been. He said ” True. Can't say much. Maybe two letters "J" and "BB" is that three letters?”
BB could be in reference to the droid BB-8, who was introduced in The Force Awakens. As for the J, I remember that Del Toro had an idea for a Jabba the Hutt Star Wars gangster film, so that’s what the J could stand for. He explained at the time: “I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”
It would’ve been interesting to see Del Toro take on a Star Wars film project! When addressing why the movie wasn’t made, Goyer said: "There was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. It was a cool script."
