Guillermo del Toro Weighs in On A.I. - "Don't Be Afraid of Any Intelligence; Be Afraid of Stupidity"
As you know, A.I. has been a hot topic of conversation in recent months. Lots of creative talents have their thoughts on it, and there are some people who are afraid of it and its implications. I definitely see how it’s impacted the industry that I’m in! It’s pretty wild!
There’s also a lot of discussion within the film community regarding A.I. and it’s one of the things that have been a concern for the writers in the film industry, and it’s all a part of what is going on with the ongoing writers strike. But, according to writer and director Guillermo del Toro, people shouldn’t be afraid of A.I., they should be afraid of stupidity. During a panel at last week’s Annecy animation festival, he said:
“When people say they’re scared of AI, I say don’t be afraid of any intelligence; be afraid of stupidity. Every intelligence is artificial. Stupidity is natural. Completely, 100 percent natural, organic. Be afraid of stability. That’s the real enemy.” Referencing studio speech, he noted: “I think when somebody calls stories ‘content,’ when somebody says ‘pipeline,’ they’re using sewage language.”
He makes some good points here. It’s the stupid people that will replace real people with real personalities and real creativity with an A.I. chatbot. Look, I can see using A.I. as a tool, but replacing real people with it seems ridiculous. But, that is happening.
What are your thoughts on what Del Toro had to say about A.I.? What are your thoughts on A.I.?
