Guillermo del Toro's SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Gets a PG-13 Rating

As expected, producer Guillermo del Toro’s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark has landed a PG-13 rating. The film is based on Alvin Schwartz’s horror book series, which was geared towards younger readers, but for those of you who grew up with these books in your lives, you know how freakin’ terrifying the subject matter was!

Don’t worry, though! Just because the film is rated PG-13 doesn’t mean it’s not going to deliver any nightmarish terror. According to Box Office Mojo, the film is rated PG-13 for "terror/violence, disturbing images, thematic elements, language including racial epithets, and brief sexual references."

One thing that del Toro and director Andre Ovredal didn’t want to do with this film is skimp out on the horror. They wanted to make sure the the true horrific spirit and essence of the book remained as they brought those stories to the big screen.

Remember, Insidious was PG-13, and that movie was legitimately scary! I imagine that Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark will push the boundaries of fear as well.

The film is set in 1968 in America, “Change is blowing in the wind...but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home."

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark lands in theaters on August 9th.
