HALLOWEEN ENDS Director Addresses Michael Myers Not Being the Focus of the Story
Halloween Ends certainly was an interesting and unexpected way to bring an end to the Halloween franchise. A lot of fans are divided on how the movie turned out. While I liked the concept, and I liked what they were going for, for me, the execution just didn’t work. For me, it was like, if Hallmark or Lifetime made a Halloween movie, this is what it would be.
Now, I did have fun watching the movie! I watched in a theater with an audience that was laughing and making fun of aspects of the film, such as the dialogue, and how some aspects of the story played out. I still plan on watching the movie again in a different setting, because I have friends that are telling me it’s a great film and that I’m totally wrong.
Anyway, there was a controversial decision made with the story that it wouldn’t really put the focus on Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Instead, the movie’s main focus was on a new character named Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) and his relationship with Allyson (Andi Matichak), Laurie’s granddaughter.
Director David Gordon Green recently explained why the decision to hold Michael back was made telling Collider:
"It's still a controversy today. I just watched the movie outside of a technical format, meaning in a sound mix or a color correction, for the first time two days ago. We really just finished this movie. [Laughs] So two days ago, and I'm watching it and I'm like, 'We're asking a lot.
"But then when we were in the editing room and we would do [it] differently, it felt wrong. And so if you don't have an intuition, if you don't have a vision, you shouldn't be making this movie, and I think there's obvious challenges and things that you would bring to discussion with editors, with producers and say, 'This is what feels right,' and at a point we all just looked at each other and said, 'We're taking a big risk here, but it does feel right and we know we're getting into. Let's go for it.'"
So, in the end, Corey becomes something like Michael's protégé in the movie, learning how to embrace the evil that he’s absorbed from Michael Myers. It's through Corey that we're eventually reintroduced to Michael, who's just been hiding away in the sewers of Haddonfield since the events of Halloween Kills.
What did you all think of Halloween Ends? Were you happy with the movie!?
