Hank Azaria Is Retiring the Voice Apu on THE SIMPSONS

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the character Apu on The Simpsons since the documentary The Problem with Apu was released a couple of years ago. The doc pointed out how the character was offensive to the Indian culture, and word was that Apu would eventually be phased out the series. Since then, fans have been wondering what the future of the character would be.

Well, thanks to /Film, we know have some new information. They asked voice actor Hank Azaria about the future of the character, and that’s where he revealed that he has retired the voice of Apu.

“All we know there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something.”

Now, Apu could still be a part of The Simpsons with another voice actor taking on the role. Apparently the idea of an Indian actor taking on the role has been speculated, but nothing has been officially decided or announced. Azaria went on to say:

“What they’re going to do with the character is their call. It’s up to them and they haven’t sorted it out yet. All we’ve agreed on is I won’t do the voice anymore.

“We all made the decision together. We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

As someone who grew up on The Simpsons, I always enjoyed Apu. In my opinion, if the creators of The Simpsons do decide to keep the character in the series without Azaria, it obviously won’t be the same Apu. At this point, if they do want to have an Indian character that more appropriately represents the culture, they should completely remove Apu and just replace him with a whole new character.

What do you think the creators of The Simpsons should do in this situation?
