Hanna-Barbera's 1960s Series THE BANANA SPLITS Is Being Adapted into a Horror Movie
Well, here’s some interesting and weird movie news! the classic 1960s Hanna-Barbera kids program The Banana Splits is going to be making a come back as a film! But, there’s a little twist… it’s going to be a horror movie!
The Banana Splits is a TV series that premiered in 1968. It’s way before my time, and I’m not really familiar with it. But I went to YouTube to watch a few videos for it, and it definitely looks like it could and should be a psycho horror movie! Here’s a little description of it:
A laugh track-laden collection of live-action buffoonery and animated segments for undiscerning young minds. Whether in their crazy clubhouse or out cavorting among the public, costumed animal hosts Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky would engage in all manner of harmless nonsense, and even strap on musical instruments to perform hippie-dippie rock numbers.
Warner Bros. Entertainment is teaming up with Syfy to produce the horror film, which will bring back the classic characters first introduced to audiences.
The story will follow “a boy named Harley and his family (brother Austin, mother Beth and father Mitch) attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom and their new pals safely escape?'“
The Banana Splits movie stars Dani Kind (Wyonna Earp) as Beth, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (The Kindness of Strangers) as Harley, Romeo Carere as Austin, Steve Lund (Street Legal, Schitt’s Creek) as Mitch, and Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries, A Series of Unfortunate Events, War for the Planet of the Apes) as Rebecca.
The film was written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Raven’s Home, My Super Psycho Sweet 16) and directed by Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16).
The Banana Splits movie will get a home entertainment release in advance of its television debut on Syfy. Here’s the opening and closing credits of the original program to give you an idea of what the original series was like.
