HAPPY DEATH DAY 3 Is Finally Actually Moving Forward
After years of vague updates, and “maybe someday” answers, Happy Death Day 3 is finally crawling out of limbo and is really actually moving forward!
At a recent American Cinematheque double feature of the first two Happy Death Day films, star Jessica Rothe delivered the news fans have been dying to hear (again and again):
“The third movie is moving forward.”
Director Christopher Landon, standing beside her, kept it short and sweet:
“It is moving forward.”
That’s more definitive than anything we’ve gotten over the last six years.
It’s been a long wait since Happy Death Day 2U hit theaters in 2019. Despite solid box office numbers and a passionate fanbase, the third film has stalled, mostly due to behind-the-scenes uncertainty.
At one point, Landon revealed there was talk of turning the finale into a limited series for Peacock, but that never materialized.
Back in 2020, Landon even shared the working title, Happy Death Day to Us, and teased a story “different than the other two films.” Fans have been left wondering ever since if they’d ever get to see that vision.
Rothe echoed that same hope years ago in an interview, saying:
“I would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy. I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right. I think it’s just a question of seeing if the opportunity for that exists in the world.”
And in a line that aged surprisingly well, she added:
“But the funny thing is I have a feeling whether it’s now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, I know that we will get to tell the rest of the story. I love Tree, I love that character so much and I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of that.”
While there’s still no official word on when production begins, or what the story will be, Landon and Rothe are excited and ready to bring Tree back and finish what they started.
And in the meantime, Landon’s newest thriller Drop is set to hit theaters April 11, giving fans something else to look forward to while we wait for Happy Death Day 3 to start rolling.
We’ll keep you posted as soon as more details emerge. Until then, sharpen your cupcake knives.
