Happy Death Day 2U Moves Release Date After Plea from Parent of Parkland Shooting Victim

Happy Death Day came out in theaters on Friday the 13th in October 2017 to a pretty good response from fans who enjoyed the movie. So when its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, was set to come out, Valentine’s Day 2019 seemed like another fun day to market a horror flick. But Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. On February 14, 2018, the Parkland, Florida shooting took place at Stoneman Douglas High School, and 17 people lost their lives. So when the movie began to market its release, Fred Guttenberg, the father of 14-year old Jaime Guttenberg who was killed in the shooting, took to twitter to voice his opinion on the matter.

Here’s what Guttenberg had to say:

My daughter and 16 others were killed on February 14th. Universal Studios is releasing a move a movie called Happy Death Day 2 U? I get the pun on Valentines Day, for me it will always be the day my daughter was murdered. Please reconsider this!!!!https://t.co/mcx72VKE7A

And Universal was immediately responsive, as Guttenberg posted this follow up later the same day:

Very happy to announce that I just got off the phone with executives at Universal Studios. They will be moving the release date of the movie off of February 14th and they will also be taking steps to address the local needs of the Parkland community. This was a great outcome.

It’s so great when a big company like Universal can reach out and show that they are just made up of people who see the big picture and can relate to the plea of a grieving father.

Happy Death Day 2U will now be released in theaters on February 13th, 2019.
