HARLEY QUINN Showrunners Share Details on Cut Batman and Catwoman Sex Scene
A lot of fans love what DC Animation has been doing with the Harley Quinn animated series. The creative team is clearly having a fun time with it and trying to do new and edgy things with the stories they tell.
In Season 3 of the series, there was originally a scene planned that was cut that showed Batman going down on Catwoman. Co-creators and showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker recently offered some insight on that capped scene.
During an interview with Inverse, Halpern and Schumacker revealed more details about this Harley Quinn moment that was shot down by DC.
Harpern explained: “We wanted a cold open. We thought it’d be funny to just start on Catwoman [laying down], but you’re not really sure what’s going on…
“We wanted this idea that he’s not doing it for her. He doesn’t understand her, and he can’t sexually connect with her because he can’t emotionally connect with her.”
The scene was meant to offer some commentary on Batman’s emotional unavailability with Catwoman, which makes sense from a narrative perspective, but DC wasn’t down for it.
According to Halpern, DC told the creative team: “You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.” He went on to say that “it’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.”
So instead, the scene we got was Batman giving Catwoman a foot massage, which ended up doing a decent job of showing Batman’s trouble connecting with Catwoman.
When news initially got out that the sex scene was cut, there was a ton of talk about it on social media. In regard to that, Halpern mused that it became “a bigger deal than it probably would have” if the scene itself had simply been included in the episode.
