HARRY POTTER Casting Reports Say Brett Goldstein Is Up for Hagrid, Mark Stong for Dumbledore, and More

New potential casting has been reported for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. This is a huge project that fans are keeping a close eye on because people are interested in who will be cast as their favorite and beloved characters.

It was previously reported that Mark Rylance was up for the role of Albus Dumbledore, and that Gangs of London actor Paapa Essiedu is being eyed for the role of Professor Severus Snape.

Deadline has confirmed these actors, but they’ve also added a few more to the list. They say that Mark Strong is also up for the role of Dumbledore, which would be interesting to see.

Producers are also said to be looking to cast Ted Lasso actor Brett Goldstein in the role of Hogwarts’ gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, which was originated by Robbie Coltrane in the films. That could be fun casting!

Then there’s Bad Sisters co-creator/star Sharon Horgan who is being looked at for Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall, who was previously portrayed by the late Maggie Smith in the movies. Rachel Weisz is also on the studio’s “wish list” for the role.

No casting deals have closed for the series, and HBO is still on the hunt for a new trio of young actors to play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.

It was revealed that 32,000 kids have sent audition tapes for the lead roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron.

The series will be “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling.

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years.

“Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Francesca Gardiner (Sucession) will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the show and Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes in addition to executive producing.

The Harry Potter TV series will be filmed at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden where the movies were shot, and it’s slated to debut on HBO in late 2026-27.
