HARRY POTTER Returns to Hogwarts in Magical New Trailer For HBO Max Series
It’s time to head back to Hogwarts. The new trailer for HBO Max’s Harry Potter series has arrived, offering another look at the upcoming adaptation and a Wizarding World that feels instantly familiar while clearly trying to establish its own identity.
Based on the beloved books by J.K. Rowling, the series will start at the beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, following 11-year-old Harry as he discovers that the strange life he’s been living is about to get a whole lot stranger.
The official synopsis reads, “An orphan boy, mistreated by his relatives, discovers he’s a wizard. He receives a letter to attend Hogwarts School, where he finds friendship, magic, and adventure — finally discovering the home and love he was always meant to have.”
The upcoming adaptation is expected to restore characters and moments from the books that never made it into the movies. That’s easily one of the most interesting things about returning to this story as a television series.
Eight episodes give the filmmakers considerably more room to spend time at Hogwarts, develop the characters, and dig into parts of the book that previously had to be trimmed or removed entirely.
So far, I think the series looks pretty good. It has enough familiar Harry Potter imagery to make returning fans feel at home, but it also looks different enough to keep this from feeling like an expensive reenactment of the 2001 movie.
I’m especially curious to see how much more time the series spends with the characters and the smaller pieces of Rowling’s story. The movies created such a recognizable version of this world that any new adaptation has a tough job ahead of it, but expanding the story rather than simply repeating it could give this series a reason to exist alongside the films.
Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton playing Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout taking on Ron Weasley. The ensemble also includes John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, and Rory Wilmot, among others.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will consist of eight episodes and is set to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
