Hasbro Will Let You Put Your Face on Action Figures This Fall

Hasbro recently announced an interesting platform that will be added to the Hasbro Pulse Mobile App this fall. The Hasbro Selfie Series will allow you to essentially take a picture of your face and have it put on a collector-grade 6-inch action figure with costume designs from their top brands including G.I. JOE, Ghostbusters, Marvel, Power Rangers, and Star Wars. This is possible thanks to proprietary software from Hasbro and a partnership with Formlabs. If you attend San Diego Comic-Con, you could be one of the first to check out the new Hasbro Self Series and a select few will even be able to be the first ones to create and purchase their figures. Talking about this new venture, Brian Chapman of Hasbro said:

We are super excited to dive into the world of personalization and customization with Hasbro Selfie Series. We have done extensive research to truly understand the fan’s ask for a personalized product, and the team has done a fantastic job at making that dream a reality. The innovation on this proprietary technology is truly remarkable, and we cannot wait to give fans the opportunity to add themselves to their collections.

Hasbro’s Kwamina Crankson added:

Hasbro Selfie Series is giving us a new way to engage with the fans. We are just scratching the surface when it comes to customization, and we’re excited to see where this new, innovative platform takes us.

I have a lot of thoughts on this. For starters, they don’t mention the cost of this in the press release. That always has me a little worried. I can 100% see this be Hasbro charging an arm and a leg. Second, I don’t think Hasbro has the best track record with face sculpts. Sometimes they get it right, but I feel like (at least with Power Rangers) most of the time the faces just look a little (or more, depending on the character) off. Based on the images shared, these don’t look that much better overall. There are also privacy concerns to consider.

All that negativity out there, I do think this is also really cool. I know that I have dreamed of being the Red Ranger since I was about four, and this would let me have an action figure of the Red Ranger with my face on it. A plethora of fans are going to love this for that reason. So many of us have dreamed of being certain characters or in specific roles and this helps feed that dream just a little bit.

What do you think? Is this a nightmare waiting to unfold or something really cool?
