HAWKEYE Director Rhys Thomas Set to Direct the Live-Action ROBOTECH Movie for Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures is moving forward with its live-action feature film adaptation of Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari’s Robotech. The studio has hired Rhys Thomas to direct the film, and he previously worked as one of the main directors of Marvel’s Hawkeye series.

The film is currently in development with the script being written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Punisher War Zone, Kraven The Hunter), with a rewrite by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka (Sharper). Harmony Gold is also involved.

Sony Pictures has been trying to get a Robotech project off the ground for about a decade and it looks like they are finally ready to actually get it into production. I really want to be excited about this! But, when it comes to Sony and these types of films, like with their Marvel franchise, they still haven’t figured out the storytelling magic without the help of Marvel Studios. I hope it ends up being a great film, though, that fans will love!

Robotech was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and to see it brought to life in live-action form is something I’ve been wanting to see for years. The last director attached to the project was Andy Muschietti (It), and it’s a shame things didn’t work out with him.

Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

This film has the potential to be a freakin’ badass film with insanely stunning visuals! Let’s hope they get it right.
