Hayao Miyazaki is Developing His First CG Animated Film

Hayao Miyazaki will never really retire, and now he has started developing a new short film for Studio Ghibli. What makes this project so special is the fact that it will be the legendary director's first CG animated film project.

The news was reported by Studio Ghibli's Goro Miyazaki, who has worked on films such as Ronia the Robber's Daughter, Tales from Earthsea, and From Up On Poppy Hill. When talking about his father's new project, he says:

"Now, Hayao Miyazaki is trying to make a short with CG to screen at the Ghibli Museum. He gets bored when his goal is maintaining [the Ghibli Museum], so he needs things to fiddle around with."

Miyazaki is a master at traditional hand-drawn animation, and it will be interesting to see how his style translates to CG animation. When Miyazaki retired, he retired from feature films. When he made that announcement, he said:

"I intend to work until the day I die. I retired from feature-length films but not from animation. Self-indulgent animation.

So it sounds like we can expect to see more things like this CG animated film project from the artist over the years. He also said:

"I do want to continue making short films such as the ones we show at the Ghibli Museum. I will continue making those. We will continue to make short films for the Ghibli Museum with a small staff of animators. But I think gradually it will quietly disappear in the future."

When talking about the art of animation and the state of tradition hand-drawn work, he says:

"I think talent decides everything. More than the method, what's important is the talent using it. There's nothing inherently wrong or right about a method, whether it be pencil drawings or 3-D CG. Pencil drawings don't have to go away, but those who continue to use the medium lack talent. So sadly, it will fade away."

Hopefully we'll get to see these short films that he creates! I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki, but I don't ever see myself going to Japan to see all of the wonderful work he has done for his museum.
