Hayao Miyazaki's HOW DO YOU LIVE? Will Be Studio Ghibli's First Film Released in IMAX
Studio Ghibli has confirmed that Hayao Miyazaki’s upcoming anime film, How Do You Live? will open simultaneously on IMAX with its general theatrical release in Japan on July 14. This marks the first time that Studio Ghibli will have released one of its films in IMAX.
Studio Ghibli president and producer Suzuki Toshio recently revealed the surprising news that they would not be marketing Miyazaki’s final anime film, which is just crazy to me, but then I come from a marketing background. There will be no ads, trailers, images, story details, or voice cast info revealed. Marketing helps maximize profits, which is something these kinds of films need to keep getting made.
Toshio believes that it will build excitement for fans, but Miyazaki has expressed he’s worried about it, saying: “I wonder if it’ll be okay without publicity, I am beginning to worry […] I’m concerned, that’s all.”
When previously talking about the film and why he was making it, Miyazaki said: "I am making this movie because I do not have the answer." It’s also explained that the movie is a gift for Miyazaki's grandson. Studio Ghibli co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki added: "It's his way of saying 'Grandpa is moving on to the next world, but he's leaving behind this film.'" Suzuki has also described the film as “fantasy on a grand scale.”
The movie will be released in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. The film will also screen in Dolby Atmos, Dolby Cinema, and DTS:X.
