Hayden Christensen Defends George Lucas' Dialogue in the STAR WARS Prequel Trilogy
When the Star Wars prequel trilogy was first announced they became the most anticipated films ever because no one expected any more Star Wars movies at that point and the franchise was still extremely popular among fans. Then the first film came out and it ended up not being what fans a lot of fans were expecting.
I’ve personally come to appreciate the trilogy a lot more over the years, but when I first saw them it was rough. One aspect of the films that drew a lot of criticism was the script and the dialogue. Well, Hayden Christensen recently went out and defended the dialogue in the films, and explained that it was intentionally heightened. He told The Guardian:
"George Lucas creates such a unique world where everything is so specific, from the way these characters look and the way that they talk, and I feel like sometimes people lose sight of that and they expect them to speak the same way that we speak -- and that's not what we were going for. He was very much like a mentor to me and he was so gracious with his time. I became very close with his family, and my family became close with his family."
Christensen went on to share Lucas’s opinion of those that didn’t like the prequel films saying:
"I guess the impression that I got from George Lucas was that if they don't like them, then they don't 'get' it -- and that was good enough for me. It just seemed like a really exciting opportunity ... It was a no-brainer. In a heartbeat. When I got the call, I was instantly elated ... I was just so excited to get to come back after all these years."
Now, after all these years, Star Wars fans are incredibly excited to see Christensen and Ewan McGregor coming back to reprise their roles and continue their stories in Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. I think a big part of that excitement comes from watching shows such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I loved the stories that those shows told with these characters!
