Hayden Christensen Says Darth Vader Hunting Down Obi-Wan Kenobi Is "a Personal Mission For Him"
One of the movie exciting aspects of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series is that we are going to get to see Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader face off with Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time since the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith when Kenobi left Anakin for dead on Mustafar after slicing several of his limbs off.
It’s safe to say that Darth Vader has held a grudge and that he’s insanely angry. He’s also suffering the loss of Padmé. Vader is living in crisis and it makes sense that he’d want to take out his anger on Obi-Wan. Christensen recently talked about Vader’s state of mind as he once again comes face to face with Kenobi saying:
"Vader is at a pivotal time in his life. He's spent ten years now sort of imprisoned in this suit and in his new life, and how all of that has affected him. There's a lot of great character exploration there. I don't want to give anything away, but there's really sort of a struggle of identity with Vader. I think that's at the core of who he is. And in this, we get to explore that."
He went on to say:
"His pursuit of the Jedi and trying to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's a personal mission for him. I'm excited for people to see it."
In another interview with Yahoo, the actor added that Vader is trying to kill and bury the Anakin side of himself: "We learn more about [Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi]. He's a very complex character, there's a lot there to dig into. He's on a mission. He's very driven in his pursuit of hunting down the remaining Jedi, and that mission is a very personal one for him." He added, "In a lot of ways [Vader's mission] is him reconciling his past, and trying to realize the identity that he really wants to move towards ... He's trying to bury Anakin as deep down inside as possible ... He's trying to kill that side of himself."
I’m excited to see it! It’s going to be incredibly interesting to see how this all plays out between these characters.
The story is set 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.
The show also stars Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi lands in theaters on May 27th.
