HBO Cancels Stephen King's THE OUTSIDER After One Season, but It May Find a New Home
Dammit! Another one of my favorite shows has been canceled after only one season. HBO has decided not to move forward with the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider. The first season was freakin’ great, and it was a huge hit that also had strong viewership during its nine episode run earlier this year.
There’s no information on why the series was canceled, but there still might be some life in it. Just not at HBO. MRC Television, which produces the series based on King's novel, will try to find a new home for it. Showrunner Richard Price remains attached to a possible second season.
HBO said in a statement, "We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason, Andrew [Bernstein], and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King."
The Outsider follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), “as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.” While this is going on, another man (Bateman) is arrested for the murder, and he claims he’s innocent.
The rest of the cast includes Jason Bateman, Cynthia Erivo, Bill Camp, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson, Yul Vázquez, Jeremy Bobb, and Marc Menchaca.
Bateman also directed the first two episodes and is an executive producer on the series. Hopefully, the creative team behind the show will be able to find a new home for it. I want to see this story continue!
