HBO is Developing Four GAME OF THRONES Spinoff Series with George R.R. Martin
With only a couple seasons of Game of Thrones remaining, HBO is already thinking about the future of the popular franchise. The Hollywood Report reports that the cable network is developing four different "potential follow-up series" and are working with four writers including George R.R. Martin. This is great news for those of us that will go through major Westeros withdrawals when Game of Thrones concludes after its eighth season.
The report says that the four projects will take place in different time periods of Westeros, but it's not clear if any of them will be direct prequels, sequels or just a spinoff. It looks like they've got some pretty great writers involved in the development process too. Martin is working with two different writing teams, the first includes Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island and 2014's Godzilla) and Jane Goldman (Stardust and Kick-Ass) The second writing team consists of Oscar winner Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential and Mystic River); and Carly Wray (Mad Men and The Leftovers). What a talented group of writers. On the surface it looks like the future of the Game of Thrones world is in good hands. Unfortunately, current Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff are not writing on any of the four projects. But they will executive produce any of the shows that move forward.
Game of Thrones is one of my favorite TV shows and I would welcome a spinoff, but is more than one "too much GOT?" What do you think? Would you watch more than one spinoff of Game of Thrones?
