HBO Max GREEN LANTERN Producer Says the Series Will Be Written Like a TV Show but Produced Like a Film
A couple of weeks ago, the Green Lantern series got the greenlight at HBO Max after having been in development since last year. The series will consist of 10 one-hour episodes, and the series will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith (The LEGO Batman Movie, Dark Shadows) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Green Lantern), with Grahame-Smith serving as showrunner.
When the series was announced, we were told that the show “will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott — Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man — and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.”
Now we have a little more info on how the series is being approached from Guggenheim, who appeared on a recorded panel for Comic-Con International's website, which was released as part of the SAM (Storytelling Across Media) one-day mini-conference. He said:
"I happen to believe -- and this is not a universally-held opinion -- that you can't do a ten-hour show or an eight-episode show, like an 8-hour movie. I don't think that works. When I see it done, there's always some flabby episodes in the middle. I think you have to approach it like a TV series and approach each episode like its own entity. Even though it's streaming, even though hopefully people will binge it, you've got to make each episode a satisfying meal. You've got to look at it with a different tempo than you would have in a two-hour movie. That being said, certainly the show for HBO Max that we're all working on, we are approaching it with the production ambitions of a movie. So we're writing it like a TV show but we're hoping to produce it like a film."
I think this is a strong approach, and Grahame-Smith and Guggenheim have a lot of experience in bringing vivid comic book stories to life. HBO has been pretty on point recently in making great series that people love as well. I am excited for Green Lantern to finally have a cool screen interpretation for fans to enjoy and be proud of. Are you excited for this series?
Green Lantern is currently in pre-production and is slated to begin production in 2021.
