HBO's HARRY POTTER Series Hires Francesca Gardiner as Showrunner and Mark Mylod to Direct Multiple Episodes
HBO’s Harry Potter series has hired Succession alums Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod. Gardiner has been tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s upcoming new untitled series based on the “Harry Potter” books, while Mylod is on board to direct multiple episodes, as well as executive produce.
Gardiner and Mylod were brought aboard the project following an extensive exercise by HBO and Warner Bros. to find the right creative team to steer the “Potter” enterprise.
With Gardiner and Mylod in place, casting is believed to be the next order of business. As announced last year, HBO plans to release the new “Harry Potter” over the course of a decade, with each season based on one of the books in the franchise.
The first installment is expected to premiere in 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on an earnings call earlier this year.
Per the logline, “The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling.
“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years.
“Each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
