Video Essay on HBO's SUCCESSION Explores the Masterful Use of Dialogue and the Insecurity It Creates
I’ve got a great video essay to share with you today from Evan Puschak, a.k.a. The Nerdwriter, that explores the incredibly masterful use of dialogue in the HBO series Succession. It explains how the dialogue creates and reflects the insecurity of each of the characters. It’s actually a pretty fascinating breakdown that’s worth watching, especially if you’re a writer.
‘Succession’ is packed with examples of words that have absolutely no meaning at all …these are words designed to be empty so that they can fulfill the act of communicating when saying something is required without making the speaker responsible for conten… All these nothing words are a form of insincerity and in this show, this world, this family, in sincerity is the rule not the exception. That doesn’t mean all words are empty, only that for the most part words have a very flimsy relationship to their literal meaning.
Succession is an incredible show that is incredibly well-written. If you haven’t watched the first two season yet, you need to.
