HBO's THE LAST OF US Series Will Expand and Enhance the Story the Game Told

A few months ago we learned that HBO was producing a series based on the hit video game The Last of Us. Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed HBO limited series Chernobyl, is developing the series and while a guest on BBC Radio 5 Live's Chernobyl Special, Mazin talked about the series and how it will not "undo" the story of the game. He says that it will actually expend and enhance it.

"I think fans of something worry that, when the property gets licensed to someone else, those people don't really understand it, or are going to change it. In this case, I'm doing it with the guy who did it, and so the changes that we're making are designed to fill things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enhance."

I’m sure that will relieve some fans of the franchise. Mazin himself is a fan of the game and the opportunity that he’s been given bring this story to life is a "dream come true." When discussing the strong emotions that are attached to the game and the challenge of adapting it, he said:

"We're creating anew and we're also reimagining what is already there to present a different format. It's kind of a dream come true for me. I'm a little bit scared because a lot of emotions connected to this game are rather intense. I think I'm probably going to go hide in a bunker for a while because you can't make everyone happy!"

No… no you can’t, especially not in this day and age of fandom. But, he’s going to jump into this, and I can’t wait to see what he delivers.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story of which centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for the deadly pandemic.

Joel, “a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

The HBO series “will cover the events of the original game, which was written by Druckmann, with the possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel.”
