HEART EYES 2 Could Be Happening as Director Josh Ruben Has Written a Sequel
It looks like love and murder might be gearing up for another date night. New reports claim that Heart Eyes 2 is quietly moving forward, even though Sony hasn’t made anything official just yet. If true, the romantic horror comedy could be getting another twisted Valentine’s Day outing.
According to a report from Dread Central, Josh Ruben has completed a draft script for a sequel to Heart Eyes. The follow-up is reportedly being developed under the radar while Ruben also lines up his next project, Wilderness Reform, over at Paramount.
As of now, Heart Eyes 2 hasn’t been officially greenlit, and there’s no production schedule locked in. There’s also no word yet on story details or which cast members might return.
Even so, Ruben has already shared how he’d like to expand the franchise if given the chance. In a 2025 interview with Variety, the director explained his approach, saying:
“I’ll put it this way: You could replicate the structure of any great rom-com, from His Girl Friday to Defending Your Life, and you could drop Heart Eyes into the center of that story, and have him flash and slash about.”
He went on to add that he’d lean into the feel of films like Bridget Jones or Love Actually, while still throwing the characters into a fight for their lives against a masked killer.
The original Heart Eyes hit theaters in the U.S. on February 7, 2025, and quickly carved out its own bloody little corner of Valentine’s horror.
The film follows a killer with glowing red eyes who resurfaces every year to stalk couples, until an advertising executive and her co-worker refuse to go down without a fight. The movie starred Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding, whose chemistry helped ground the madness.
Critics were kind to the film, and audiences showed up too. Heart Eyes pulled in roughly $33 million worldwide, a solid haul that naturally kicked off sequel conversations almost immediately.
While nothing’s locked in yet, the combination of strong reviews, decent box office, and a director already thinking sequel thoughts makes this feel like there’s a good chance it’ll happen.
If Ruben’s script ends up winning over the powers that be at Sony, it sounds like love, laughs, and glowing red eyes could be coming back for another round.
